About business & work calculators

Choose a business calculator

The Margin Calculator and Markup Calculator turn cost and price into the percentages you use to set prices, while the Profit Margin Calculator separates gross from net. For payroll, the Overtime and Timesheet calculators total hours and time-and-a-half pay, and sellers can estimate fees with the Amazon FBA Calculator.

What you need to enter

Pricing tools need any two of cost, price and margin to solve for the third. Payroll tools take hours worked and an hourly rate, applying 1.5ร— for overtime past 40 hours a week. Have your cost of goods and target margin ready before you set a price.

A worked example

Sell an item for $100 that costs you $60 and your profit is $40. That is a 40% margin (profit รท price) but a 66.7% markup (profit รท cost) - the same dollars expressed two ways. Confusing the two is the most common pricing mistake, which is why the Margin and Markup calculators keep them separate.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Both start from the same profit. Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by cost. A $40 profit on a $100 item that cost $60 is a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Under federal law, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5ร— their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. The Overtime Calculator applies that time-and-a-half automatically.

Are the Amazon FBA fees exact?

They are estimates based on the size and weight tiers you enter. Amazon updates its fee schedule periodically, so confirm current rates in Seller Central before relying on a figure for pricing.
