About investing & retirement calculators
Match the tool to your account
Use the 401(k) Calculator when an employer match is involved, the Roth IRA Calculator for tax-free growth, and the Retirement Calculator for a big-picture readiness check. The Investment Calculator handles any brokerage account, and the Social Security Calculator estimates the benefit that supplements your savings.
What you need to enter
Most tools ask for a current balance, a monthly or annual contribution, an expected annual return and years until retirement. Projections are only as good as your return assumption, so many people model a conservative 6% and an optimistic 8% to see a range.
A worked example
Contribute $500 a month to a 401(k) for 30 years at a 7% average annual return and the balance grows to roughly $610,000, even though you only deposited $180,000. That gap is compounding at work. An employer match effectively adds free contributions on top, which the 401(k) Calculator lets you include.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume?
There is no guaranteed number. Historically a diversified stock-and-bond portfolio has returned roughly 6-8% a year before inflation, but future returns vary. Model a range rather than a single figure.
What are the 2025 contribution limits?
For 2025 you can contribute up to $23,500 to a 401(k) and $7,000 to an IRA, with catch-up amounts of $7,500 and $1,000 respectively if you are 50 or older.
Do these calculators account for taxes?
Traditional 401(k) and IRA balances are taxed on withdrawal, while Roth balances are not. Our projections show pre-tax growth unless the tool is Roth-specific, so plan for taxes on traditional accounts.
