About loans & debt calculators

Pick the right loan calculator

The general Loan Calculator handles any fixed-rate installment loan, while the Auto Loan and Car Payment calculators add trade-in value, sales tax and fees. For revolving debt, the Credit Card Payoff Calculator shows how long a balance takes to clear, and the Debt-to-Income Calculator gives you the ratio lenders check before approving you.

What you need to enter

Installment-loan tools need the amount borrowed, the annual interest rate (APR) and the term in months or years. Auto tools also ask for down payment, trade-in and tax rate. For payoff tools, enter your current balance and any extra monthly payment to see how much interest you save.

A worked example

Finance a $30,000 car at 7% APR over 60 months and the payment is about $594 a month. Over the full term you repay roughly $35,642, meaning $5,642 goes to interest. Shortening the term to 48 months raises the monthly payment but cuts total interest sharply, which the Loan Comparison Calculator lets you test side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between APR and interest rate?

The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the principal. APR adds certain fees, so it is usually a little higher and is the better number for comparing loans. Our APR Calculator converts between the two.

Does a longer loan term save money?

It lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest, because you borrow for longer. A $30,000 loan at 7% costs far less over 48 months than over 72, even though each monthly payment is higher.

Will using these calculators affect my credit?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is submitted to a lender. Only a formal loan application triggers a hard credit inquiry.
