About home & construction calculators
Pick the calculator for your material
The Concrete Calculator returns cubic yards for slabs, footings and columns; the Paint Calculator converts wall area into gallons. For landscaping, the Mulch, Gravel and Topsoil calculators work in cubic yards, and the Square Footage Calculator is the starting point whenever you need an area first.
What you need to enter
Measure length, width and depth (or thickness) in feet and inches. Concrete and landscape tools convert those dimensions to cubic yards, since that is how suppliers sell bulk material. Always round up and add a waste allowance - roughly 5-10% - for spillage, uneven ground and offcuts.
A worked example
A concrete slab 10 feet by 12 feet at 4 inches thick works out to about 1.48 cubic yards (10 ร 12 ร 0.333 รท 27). Suppliers deliver in quarter-yard increments, so you would order 1.5 yards, and on a real pour many crews bump that slightly to cover spillage and an uneven subgrade.
Frequently asked questions
Why do results come in cubic yards?
Bulk materials like concrete, gravel, mulch and topsoil are sold by the cubic yard in the U.S. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The calculators convert your feet-and-inches measurements automatically.
Should I order extra material?
Yes. Add roughly 5-10% for waste from spillage, uneven surfaces and offcuts. It is cheaper to have a little left over than to stop mid-project and reorder.
Are these estimates exact?
They are close estimates based on the dimensions you enter. Real sites have irregular depths and shapes, so treat the result as an order guide and confirm with your supplier for large pours.
