About taxes & income calculators

Which tax calculator do you need?

The Income Tax Calculator estimates your total federal bill, while the Paycheck Calculator shows take-home pay after tax and FICA on a single check. Use the Salary Calculator to convert between hourly and annual pay, and the Tax Refund Calculator to see whether you are over- or under-withheld for the year.

What you need to enter

Start with your gross income and filing status (single, married filing jointly or head of household). The standard deduction is applied automatically: $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for joint filers in 2025. Add pre-tax 401(k) or HSA contributions to lower taxable income.

A worked example

A single filer earning $60,000 subtracts the $15,000 standard deduction for $45,000 of taxable income. Federal tax comes to about $5,162 - that's 10% on the first $11,925 plus 12% on the rest - an effective rate near 8.6%. FICA of 7.65% and any state tax are separate, which the Paycheck Calculator layers in.

Frequently asked questions

Which tax year do these calculators use?

The 2025 federal tax year, for returns filed in early 2026. They use the 2025 brackets, the $15,000 single / $30,000 joint standard deduction, and 2025 FICA rates.

Do these include state income tax?

The federal tools estimate federal tax and FICA only. State income tax varies widely and a handful of states have none, so add your state rate separately for a complete picture.

What is FICA?

FICA is the payroll tax for Social Security (6.2% up to the $176,100 wage base in 2025) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages). Employees pay 7.65% total, matched by the employer.
