About savings & interest calculators
Choose a savings calculator
The Compound Interest Calculator is the workhorse for any growing balance; the Savings Calculator adds regular monthly deposits toward a target. For fixed-term deposits, the CD Calculator shows guaranteed earnings, and the APY Calculator converts a stated rate into the annual yield you actually earn after compounding.
What you need to enter
You typically enter a starting balance, an interest rate, how often it compounds (daily, monthly or annually) and the number of years. Tools with contributions also ask for a monthly deposit. The more often interest compounds, the more you earn on the same nominal rate.
A worked example
Deposit $10,000 at a 5% rate compounded monthly and leave it untouched for 10 years. It grows to about $16,470, so compounding alone adds roughly $6,470 with no extra deposits. Adding even $100 a month would push the total far higher, which the Savings Goal Calculator can plan for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between interest rate and APY?
The interest rate is the base rate. APY (annual percentage yield) folds in how often interest compounds, so it reflects what you truly earn in a year. A 5% rate compounded monthly works out to about 5.12% APY.
How often should interest compound?
More frequent compounding earns more on the same rate. Daily compounding beats monthly, which beats annual, though the gap is small at low rates. Most savings accounts compound daily and pay interest monthly.
Are these earnings guaranteed?
CD figures are fixed for the term. Savings-account rates are variable and can change at any time, so treat projections for those accounts as estimates that assume the rate holds.
