A dog weight calculator turns a puppy's current weight and age into an estimate of its adult size. Example: a 14-week-old medium-breed puppy weighing 16 lb has usually reached about 40% of its adult weight, so the projection is about 40 lb (18.1 kg). Bigger breeds finish later, so the same weight at the same age means something different for a Beagle and for a Great Dane.

How the estimate works

Puppy growth is not a straight line. Weight climbs steeply in the first few months, then flattens as the growth plates close. Any usable estimate therefore needs two things: the current weight, and the share of adult weight a puppy of that size class has typically reached at that age. The formula is simply:

adult weight = current weight ÷ share of adult weight already reached

The classic rules of thumb are special cases of that formula, each pinned to one convenient weigh-in age. A small breed at 6 weeks is around a quarter of its adult weight, so the rule is to multiply by 4. A medium breed at 14 weeks is around 40%, so the multiplier is 2.5. A large or giant breed at 20 weeks is around half, so the multiplier is 2. The crude general version that circulates online is:

adult weight ≈ current weight ÷ age in weeks × 52

That version assumes a puppy adds weight at a constant rate for its first year, which is false for every size class. It is included in the calculator as a third opinion so you can see how far it drifts, but the growth-curve figure is the one to plan with.

The three classic rules of thumb

These are the anchor points the calculator is built on. Each one is a single weigh-in age paired with a multiplier, which is why they only work near that age.

Notice that the large and giant rows share the same rule. The difference between them shows up after the 20-week mark: a large breed is close to finished by 18 months, while a giant breed is still adding weight at two years.

Worked example: a 14-week puppy at 16 lb

Say you have a medium-breed puppy, expected to land somewhere in the 21 to 50 lb range, and it weighs 16.0 lb at 14 weeks (3.2 months). Step by step:

  1. A medium-breed puppy at 14 weeks is at about 40% of its adult weight.
  2. Divide: 16.0 ÷ 0.40 = 40.0 lb projected adult weight, which is 18.1 kg.
  3. The classic medium rule agrees exactly here, because 14 weeks is its anchor age: 16.0 × 2.5 = 40.0 lb.
  4. The linear 52-week formula gives 16.0 ÷ 14 × 52 = 59.4 lb, an overshoot of about 49%.
  5. Weight still to gain: 40.0 − 16.0 = 24.0 lb, spread over roughly the next nine months.
  6. Estimate band at plus or minus 10%: 36.0 lb to 44.0 lb (16.3 kg to 20.0 kg).

Two thirds of the total weight gain happens before the six-month mark. That is why weekly weigh-ins feel dramatic early on and then quietly stop mattering.

Turned upside down, those shares become multipliers. At 8 weeks the multiplier is about 3.03 for a small breed, 4.17 for a medium, 5.00 for a large and 5.26 for a giant. By 26 weeks they have collapsed to 1.20, 1.50, 1.63 and 1.67. The later you weigh, the smaller the multiplier and the tighter the estimate, which is the single most useful fact on this page.

The gap across a single row is the cost of guessing the size class wrong. A 20 lb sixteen-week puppy projects to 33.3 lb as a small breed and 51.3 lb as a giant, a spread of 18 lb, which is the difference between a lap dog and a dog that can pull you off your feet.

Second worked example: a 20-week large-breed puppy

A large-breed puppy weighs 38 lb at 20 weeks (4.6 months). A large breed at 20 weeks is at roughly half its adult weight, so the growth curve projects 38 ÷ 0.50 = 76.0 lb (34.5 kg), with a band of 68.4 lb to 83.6 lb. The classic rule for large breeds is the same calculation dressed differently: 38 × 2 = 76.0 lb. The linear formula gives 38 ÷ 20 × 52 = 98.8 lb, about 30% high, because it pretends the puppy keeps gaining 1.9 lb per week for the rest of the year. In reality the weekly gain falls off sharply after six months, and a large-breed puppy still adds a slow 10% between its first and second birthday, mostly as chest and muscle rather than height.

How to use this dog weight calculator

  1. Pick the size class. Use the expected adult weight, not the current one. If you know the breed, that is easy. For a mixed breed, use the shelter or breeder estimate, or the size of the larger parent.

What changes the result the most

  • The size class you choose: by far the biggest lever. The same 16-week weight can project 50% higher under a giant class than a small one.
  • The age of the weigh-in: an estimate from an 8-week weight multiplies any error by three to five. The same estimate at 26 weeks multiplies it by less than two.
  • Sex: in most breeds males finish noticeably heavier than females, which is a large part of the spread inside a breed.
  • Parent size: the best single predictor available for a purebred puppy. If you can see both parents, their weights bracket the likely outcome better than any table.
  • Litter position: the runt of a litter often catches up substantially, so a very early weigh-in can understate the eventual size.
  • Body condition at the time of the weigh-in: a chubby puppy is not on its way to being a bigger dog, only a heavier one right now.

Why the linear 52-week formula overshoots

The formula that divides by age in weeks and multiplies by 52 treats growth as a straight line to the first birthday. Compare its multiplier against the curve for a medium breed: at 8 weeks the linear rule says 6.50 while the curve says 4.17; at 16 weeks it says 3.25 against 2.22; at 26 weeks it says 2.00 against 1.50. Only around 12 months do the two converge, at which point neither is telling you anything you did not already know, because the dog is nearly grown. Use the linear formula as a sanity ceiling, meaning your puppy is very unlikely to exceed it, rather than as a prediction.

Growth by life stage

The first eight weeks belong to the breeder or the shelter and are dominated by weaning. From 8 to 16 weeks a puppy typically doubles its weight, which is the phase that surprises new owners the most. From 16 to 26 weeks the pace stays high but starts to bend, and this is where a small breed effectively finishes, arriving at roughly 83% of adult weight by 26 weeks. Large and giant breeds are only at 61% and 60% at the same age. Between 6 and 12 months a medium breed closes the last third, while a giant breed still has around 13% to go at its first birthday and spends the whole second year filling out its chest and shoulders. The practical consequence: a first-birthday photo tells you almost everything about a Beagle and rather less about a Newfoundland.

Tips for a better estimate

  • Weigh at the same time of day, ideally before a meal, so a full stomach does not add a pound to the reading.
  • Use the same scale every time. Consistency matters more than absolute accuracy when you are watching a trend.
  • Log the numbers. Three weigh-ins two weeks apart tell you whether your puppy tracks above or below the curve, which is worth more than any single estimate.
  • Weigh both parents if you can. For a purebred puppy, the midpoint of the parents' weights, adjusted for sex, is a strong reality check on the calculator's answer.
  • Wait until 16 weeks for a number you plan around. Before 12 weeks the multiplier is so large that small measurement errors get amplified.
  • Run both neighboring size classes for a mixed breed and treat the two results as the outer edges of a range.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The curve is a generic rule-of-thumb model built by interpolating between the three classic anchor points. It is not measured breed data and no breed-specific chart is applied.
  • It assumes the puppy is healthy and in normal body condition. Illness, parasites, or a period of underfeeding change the shape of the curve.
  • It does not distinguish male from female, although the difference within a breed is often 10% to 20%.
  • It cannot know your puppy's genetics. Two littermates can finish 15% apart.
  • It says nothing about height, frame or build, only projected weight.
  • It is not veterinary advice and cannot judge whether a puppy is growing too fast, too slowly, or carrying too much weight. That belongs to your veterinarian.

Choosing the size class from the current weight

The selector asks for the adult size class. A 20 lb four-month-old is not a small breed; on the small-breed curve it would project to about 33 lb, while on the large curve it projects to 50 lb. Guess the finish line, not where the puppy stands today.

Applying a rule of thumb far from its anchor age

The multiplier of 2.5 belongs to a 14-week weigh-in for a medium breed. Using it on a 26-week puppy inflates the answer by two thirds. Either weigh at the anchor age or let the growth curve handle the in-between ages.

Treating the linear 52-week formula as the answer

It is the roughest of the three methods and it overshoots almost everywhere. On the 14-week 16 lb example it returns 59.4 lb against roughly 40 lb from the curve. Read it as an upper bound, never as a target.

Estimating from an 8-week weigh-in and stopping there

At 8 weeks the multiplier runs from about 3.03 to 5.26 depending on class, so a half-pound error becomes a two- to three-pound error in the projection. Re-run the numbers at 16 and 26 weeks before you rely on them.

Assuming a giant breed is done at one year
