Pure unit arithmetic. ppm is a ratio, so 1 ppm equals 0.0001%, 1,000 ppb and one part in a million. The mg/L, µg/L and grains-per-gallon rows hold for dilute water solutions, where 1 liter weighs 1 kilogram. What ppm actually means
Parts per million is a ratio, not a measurement unit in its own right. It says how many units of a substance sit inside a million units of the total mixture. Percent works the same way with a hundred instead of a million, and per mille (‰) uses a thousand. Because both quantities in the ratio carry the same unit, the units cancel and what is left is a bare number. That is why 1 ppm can be written as 0.0001%, as the fraction 0.000001, as 1 x 10 to the power of minus 6, or as the ratio 1 in 1,000,000 - all four say exactly the same thing.
Concentrations this small are common because trace amounts matter. A chemical at 5 ppm in a rinse tank, a mineral at 120 ppm in tap water, an additive at 30 mg/kg in animal feed: writing these as 0.0005%, 0.012% and 0.003% would bury the significant digits behind zeros. ppm keeps the number readable, and ppb and ppt take over when even ppm produces a long decimal.
The ppm formula
Every result on this page comes from one equation:
ppm = part ÷ whole × 1,000,000 The part is the amount of the substance you care about and the whole is the total amount of mixture, both measured in the same unit. The two most useful rearrangements are just as simple:
part = ppm × whole ÷ 1,000,000
percent = ppm ÷ 10,000 The second one is the conversion people look up most often. A million is 10,000 times a hundred, so any ppm figure divided by 10,000 gives percent, and any percent multiplied by 10,000 gives ppm.

Worked example: salt in a 50-liter tank
You dissolve 2.5 grams of a salt in 50 liters of water and want the concentration in ppm. First put both quantities in the same unit. Fifty liters of water weighs 50 kilograms, which is 50,000 grams. Now apply the formula:
ppm = 2.5 g ÷ 50,000 g × 1,000,000 = 50 ppm So the tank sits at 50 ppm. Reading that across the other units: it is 0.005%, 50,000 ppb, 50 mg/L, 0.05 g/L, 50 mg/kg, about 2.92 grains per gallon, and the decimal fraction 0.00005. The 1-in-N form is 1 part in 20,000. Notice how the mg/L figure equals the ppm figure exactly - 2,500 mg of salt spread through 50 liters is 50 mg per liter, which is the same 50.

Percent to ppm
The same relationship read from the other end. This is the direction you need when a product label prints a small percent and a protocol asks for ppm.

Second worked example: dosing 100 gallons to 5 ppm
You need a 100-gallon tank to sit at 5 ppm of an additive. Because 1 ppm in water is 1 mg per liter, the calculation is a single multiplication once the volume is in liters. A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, so 100 gallons is 378.54 liters:
mass = 5 ppm × 378.54 L = 1,892.71 mg = 1.893 g That is about 1.89 grams, or 0.067 ounces - a smaller amount than most people expect, which is exactly why a calculator beats a guess here. Scaling the same target: a 5-gallon bucket needs 0.095 g, a 55-gallon drum needs 1.04 g, and 1,000 gallons needs 18.93 g. The table is linear in both directions: double the ppm or double the gallons and the mass doubles, which makes it easy to interpolate a value that is not listed.
Why 1 ppm equals 1 mg/L in water
This equivalence saves a step in nearly every water calculation, and it comes straight from the density of water. One liter of water weighs about 1 kilogram, which is 1,000 grams, which is 1,000,000 milligrams. Put 1 milligram of anything into that liter and you have 1 part in a million by mass. The same logic gives 1 µg/L = 1 ppb and 1 g/L = 1,000 ppm.
The shortcut holds because dilute solutions have essentially the density of pure water. It stops holding in two situations. First, when the solution is concentrated enough that dissolved solids change the density noticeably - brines are the classic case. Second, when the liquid is not water at all: in a solvent with a density of 0.79 kg/L, 1 mg/L is 1.27 ppm by mass, so the numbers no longer match. Water hardness: grains per gallon and ppm
American water-treatment equipment is usually rated in grains per gallon while laboratory reports print mg/L, which is ppm. One grain is 64.79891 milligrams and one US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, so 1 gpg = 17.11806 mg/L. The table converts both ways.

What changes the result the most
- Unit mismatch between part and whole: by far the biggest source of error. Grams over kilograms without converting is a 1,000-fold mistake.
- Mass versus volume basis: mass ppm and volume ppm (ppmv) are different quantities. Check which one a specification means before converting.
- Density of the medium: the 1 ppm = 1 mg/L shortcut only holds near 1 kg/L. Other liquids need a density correction.
- Gallon definition: a US gallon is 3.785 liters, an imperial gallon is about 4.546. Using the wrong one shifts a dose by 20%.
- Whether the whole includes the part: ppm is measured against the total mixture, not against the solvent alone. At trace levels the difference is negligible, but at percent-level concentrations it matters.
Practical tips
- Sanity-check with the ratio. If the calculator says 1 in 4,000 and you expected roughly 1 in 4,000, the exponent is right. Most ppm errors are factor-of-1,000 errors, which the ratio catches instantly.
- Convert to grams first. Turning everything into grams before dividing removes almost every unit mistake.
- Watch significant figures. If your scale reads to 0.01 g, quoting a ppm result to six digits is false precision. Round with the Significant Figures Calculator.
- Weigh, do not scoop. Small doses of a powder differ a lot by volume depending on how it is packed. A gram is a gram; a teaspoon is not.
- Write the unit down every time. A number like 15 means nothing until it is labeled ppm, ppb or mg/L, and the same figure in two different scales is a factor of 1,000 apart.
Limitations and assumptions
- All conversions are treated as mass ratios. Gas concentrations quoted as ppmv are mole ratios and need molar mass, temperature and pressure to convert into a mass concentration.
- Water rows assume a density of 1 kg per liter, which is accurate for dilute aqueous solutions near room temperature but not for brines, solvents or hot liquids.
- The calculator does not convert between ppm and molarity, which requires the molar mass of the compound.
- Gallons are US liquid gallons of 3.785411784 liters, not imperial gallons.
- It contains no regulatory limits, safety thresholds or dosing recommendations. It converts the number you give it; deciding whether a concentration is appropriate is up to you and the relevant standard or label.
- Volumes are assumed additive and the solute is assumed to dissolve fully, so the final volume equals the water volume you entered.

⚠️ Common mistakes & edge cases
Dividing by 100 instead of 10,000
Percent is parts per hundred, ppm is parts per million, so the gap between them is 10,000, not 100. Treating 250 ppm as 2.5% instead of 0.025% overstates the concentration by a factor of 100.
Mixing units in the part and the whole
Dividing grams by kilograms without converting is a 1,000-fold error, and it is the single most common ppm mistake. Put both quantities in the same unit first: 2.5 g in 50 L of water is 2.5 g in 50,000 g, which is 50 ppm.
Confusing ppm with ppb
They differ by a factor of 1,000. A lab result of 15 ppb is 0.015 ppm, not 15 ppm. Read the header of the report, not just the number, and re-check any figure that seems a thousand times too big or too small.
Applying 1 ppm = 1 mg/L to a non-water liquid
The shortcut depends on 1 liter weighing 1 kilogram. In a solvent with a density of 0.79 kg/L, 1 mg/L is about 1.27 ppm by mass. Multiply mg/L by the density in kg/L before calling it ppm.
Using imperial gallons for a US tank
A US gallon is 3.785411784 liters; an imperial gallon is about 4.546. Dosing 100 US gallons with an imperial-based figure adds roughly 20% too much solute. This calculator uses US liquid gallons throughout.
Reporting more digits than you measured
If the scale reads to 0.01 g and the tank volume is a rough estimate, a ppm result quoted to six decimal places is false precision. Round the answer to match your least precise input.

How do I convert ppm to percent?
Divide the ppm value by 10,000. One percent is 10,000 ppm, so 250 ppm is 250 / 10,000 = 0.025%, 1,000 ppm is 0.1%, and 10,000 ppm is exactly 1%. Going the other way, multiply percent by 10,000: 0.5% is 5,000 ppm. The conversion works because percent means parts per hundred and ppm means parts per million, and a million is 10,000 times a hundred.
What is the ppm formula?
ppm = part / whole x 1,000,000, where the part and the whole are measured in the same unit. If 2.5 grams of salt are dissolved in 50 liters of water (50,000 grams), the concentration is 2.5 / 50,000 x 1,000,000 = 50 ppm. Because the two quantities cancel, ppm has no unit of its own: it is a pure ratio, one part in a million parts.
Is 1 ppm the same as 1 mg/L?
In dilute water solutions, yes. One liter of water weighs about 1 kilogram, which is 1,000,000 milligrams, so 1 milligram of solute per liter is 1 part in a million by mass. That equivalence is why laboratory water reports print mg/L and ppm interchangeably. It breaks down for liquids that are not mostly water: in a fluid with a density of 0.8 kg/L, 1 mg/L is 1.25 ppm by mass, so multiply the mg/L figure by the density in kg/L to convert properly.
How many ppb are in 1 ppm?
One ppm equals 1,000 ppb (parts per billion), and 1 ppb equals 1,000 ppt (parts per trillion). To go from ppm to ppb multiply by 1,000; to go from ppb to ppm divide by 1,000. So 0.015 ppm is 15 ppb, and 250 ppm is 250,000 ppb. Very low trace concentrations are usually reported in ppb or ppt precisely so the number stays readable instead of turning into a long string of decimal places.
How much of a substance do I add to reach a target ppm?
In water, milligrams needed = target ppm x volume in liters. For 100 US gallons, which is 378.54 liters, a 5 ppm target needs 5 x 378.54 = 1,892.71 mg, about 1.89 grams. What does ppm mean in water hardness?
Water hardness is reported either in ppm (which equals mg/L of calcium carbonate) or in grains per gallon (gpg). One grain per US gallon is 64.79891 mg spread through 3.785411784 liters, which works out to 17.12 mg/L, so 7 gpg is about 119.83 ppm and 120 ppm is about 7.01 gpg. Is ppm by mass or by volume?
It depends on the field, and the calculator treats ppm as a mass ratio by default because that is how solutions, soils and feeds are reported. Air-quality and gas measurements often use ppmv, parts per million by volume, which is a mole ratio rather than a mass ratio. The arithmetic is identical, but you cannot mix the two: converting ppmv to a mass concentration needs the molar mass of the gas and the temperature and pressure of the sample.
What is 1 ppm as a fraction or a ratio?
One ppm is the fraction 0.000001, or 1 x 10 to the power of minus 6, or the ratio 1 in 1,000,000. Practical comparisons help: 1 ppm is about one drop of water in a 13-gallon tank, one second in about 11.6 days, or one inch in roughly 16 miles. How do I convert percent to ppm?

Can ppm be greater than 1,000,000?
No. A million parts per million is the whole sample, which is 100%, so any correctly computed ppm value falls between 0 and 1,000,000. If your calculation produces more than that, the part and the whole were probably entered in different units, or the part was mistakenly entered as the total instead of the component. Check that both quantities use the same unit before dividing.
What is the difference between ppm and mg/kg?
There is none for mass-based concentrations: 1 mg/kg is 1 milligram in 1,000,000 milligrams, which is exactly 1 ppm. Soil tests, fertilizer labels and animal feed specifications commonly print mg/kg, while water reports print mg/L and lab data sheets print ppm. All three describe the same ratio as long as the medium is water or the figure is stated by mass.

mg/L and mg/kg are not always the same number
They match for dilute water because a liter weighs a kilogram. In a concentrated brine, a solvent, or a hot liquid the density shifts and the two diverge. If precision matters, convert on a mass basis and note the density you assumed.
Small doses need a real scale
Reaching 5 ppm in 100 gallons takes only 1.89 grams. Household spoons cannot measure that reliably, and packing density varies between powders. A gram scale, or a stock solution you dilute, is far more accurate than scooping.
