What a proportion is
A ratio compares two quantities, such as 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, written 3 : 4 or 3/4. A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal: 3/4 = 9/12. Reading it aloud, "3 is to 4 as 9 is to 12." Proportions describe every situation where two quantities grow together at a constant rate - recipes, map scales, unit prices, fuel economy, drawings, shadows, currency exchange, and percentages. When one of the four numbers is unknown, solving the proportion tells you what it must be to keep the relationship intact.
The formula: cross-multiplication
The single rule behind this calculator is that in a true proportion the products of the diagonals are equal:
a / b = c / d ⇒ a × d = b × c Solve for d: d = (b × c) ÷ a Solve for c: c = (a × d) ÷ b Solve for b: b = (a × d) ÷ c Solve for a: a = (b × c) ÷ d Why it works: multiplying both sides of a/b = c/d by b × d cancels both denominators and leaves a × d = b × c. From that single equation you can isolate whichever term is unknown with one division. The only restriction is that the number you divide by cannot be zero, which is why the calculator refuses a zero in that position instead of printing "Infinity."
Worked example 1: solving for the missing value
A cookie recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 36 cookies. How much flour for 60 cookies? Set flour over cookies on both sides: 2 / 36 = x / 60.
- Cross-multiply: 2 × 60 = 36 × x, so 120 = 36x.
- Divide by 36: x = 120 ÷ 36 = 3.3333.
- Check: 2 × 60 = 120 and 36 × 3.3333 ≈ 120. The cross products match.
You need about 3 1/3 cups of flour. The scale factor is 60 ÷ 36 = 1.6667, so every other ingredient in the recipe is multiplied by the same 1.6667 - which is exactly what the result card's "scale factor" tile is for.
Worked example 2: the unknown in the denominator
A person 6 feet tall casts a 4-foot shadow. At the same moment a tree casts a 30-foot shadow. How tall is the tree? Height over shadow on both sides: 6 / 4 = x / 30, so x = (6 × 30) ÷ 4 = 180 ÷ 4 = 45 feet. Now flip the question: if the tree is 45 feet and you want the shadow length, the unknown moves to the denominator: 6 / 4 = 45 / x, so 6x = 4 × 45 = 180 and x = 180 ÷ 6 = 30 feet. Cross-multiplication does not care which position is empty - the calculator lets you tap any of the four letters to mark it as x.

Checking whether two ratios are proportional
Sometimes all four numbers are known and the question is simply "are these equal?" Cross-multiply both diagonals; if the products match, the ratios are proportional. As a second check, both ratios should reduce to the same simplest form and give the same decimal. The table shows both tests side by side - notice that 4/6 and 6/8 look close (0.6667 vs 0.75) but fail, while 7/4 and 21/12 pass even though the numbers are larger on the right.

When a proportion fails, the calculator also tells you what would fix it. For 9/12 and 8/10, keeping 9, 12 and 8 means the fourth value would have to be (12 × 8) ÷ 9 = 10.6667, not 10.
Percent problems as proportions
Every percentage question is a proportion in disguise, because "percent" means "per 100." Write part / whole = percent / 100, fill in the two values you know, and cross-multiply for the third. The three classic question types all land on the same rule:

The first three rows are deliberately chosen so the answer is 75 each time: same arithmetic engine, three different unknowns. Once you see percent problems this way you never have to memorize three separate formulas again.

What changes the result
- Which position is unknown: the same three numbers give different answers depending on where x sits. 3/4 = 9/x gives 12, but 3/4 = x/9 gives 6.75.
- Order within each ratio: swapping numerator and denominator on one side only breaks the proportion. 2/36 = 60/x returns 1,080, not 3.3333.
- Rounding of inputs: a rounded rate such as 33 mpg instead of 32 shifts every result by the same percentage. Enter the most precise figure you have.
- Units: the calculator does not convert units, so 12 inches over 1 foot must be entered as 12/1, not 12/12.
- Zero and negative values: a zero in the divisor position makes the proportion unsolvable; negatives are allowed and simply carry their sign through.
Tips for setting up a proportion correctly
- Label before you type. Write the units next to each position (inches / miles = inches / miles). If the labels do not line up, the numbers will not either.
- Estimate first. If 2 cups make 36 cookies, 60 cookies clearly need "a bit under double" - about 3 to 4 cups. An answer of 1,080 is an instant red flag.
- Use the decimal tile as a sanity check. Both sides of a solved proportion share one decimal value; if a manual calculation gives a different decimal on each side, a step went wrong.
- Copy the scale factor for multi-ingredient jobs. Solve one proportion, read the factor, and multiply everything else by it rather than setting up ten proportions.
- For percent questions, put the whole on the bottom. The whole is the base you are taking a percent of - the original price, the total students, the full tank.
Limitations and assumptions
- The calculator assumes direct proportion: doubling one quantity doubles the other. Inverse situations (more workers, fewer hours; higher speed, less time) need a × b = c × d instead and are not handled here.
- Only one unknown is solved. A proportion with two missing values has infinitely many solutions.
- Results display to four decimal places; simplified ratios treat inputs as exact to four decimals, so 0.33333 will not simplify to 1 : 3.
- Real-world relationships are not always perfectly proportional - fuel economy changes with speed, and recipes do not scale baking times linearly. Treat the result as the arithmetic answer, not a guarantee about the physical situation.

One rule, four positions
You never need four formulas. Cross-multiply to get a × d = b × c, then divide by whatever number sits beside x. The calculator's step list shows exactly which product and which divisor apply for the position you chose.
Close is not equal
4/6 = 0.6667 and 6/8 = 0.75 look similar, but the cross products 32 and 36 prove they are not proportional. Always compare cross products or fully simplified forms, not eyeballed decimals.
Percent is just a proportion with 100 on the bottom
"45 is what percent of 60" becomes 45/60 = x/100, and cross-multiplication gives 4,500 ÷ 60 = 75%. The same setup solves "what is 30% of 250" and "18 is 24% of what," each landing on 75.
⚠️ Common mistakes & edge cases
Mixing up which quantity goes on top
If flour is the numerator on the left, flour must be the numerator on the right. 2/36 = x/60 gives 3.3333 cups; the flipped 2/36 = 60/x gives 1,080 and is meaningless.
Multiplying straight across instead of diagonally
Cross-multiplication uses the diagonals: a × d and b × c. Multiplying a × c and b × d is a different (and wrong) equation. For 3/4 = 9/x, the correct products are 3x and 36, not 27 and 4x.
Treating an inverse relationship as direct
If 4 painters finish a job in 6 hours, 8 painters do not take 12 hours. That is an inverse proportion (4 × 6 = 8 × x, so x = 3 hours), which this direct-proportion calculator cannot solve.
Putting the part where the whole belongs in a percent proportion
"18 is 24% of what number" needs 18 on top and x on the bottom: 18/x = 24/100 gives 75. Writing x/18 = 24/100 returns 4.32, a different question entirely.
Dividing by zero
A zero in the position you must divide by has no finite answer. The calculator reports it rather than showing "Infinity." A zero in the numerator is fine: 0/5 = x/20 correctly gives x = 0.
Rounding in the middle of the calculation
Solving 2/36 = x/60 by first rounding 2 ÷ 36 to 0.06 and then multiplying by 60 gives 3.6 cups; keeping four decimals (0.0556) gives 3.336, and the exact answer is 3.3333. Cross-multiply first and divide last so rounding happens only once, at the end.

How do I solve a proportion for a missing value?
Cross-multiply. In a/b = c/x, the products of the diagonals are equal, so a × x = b × c. Divide both sides by a to isolate the unknown: x = (b × c) / a. For 3/4 = 9/x that is x = (4 × 9) / 3 = 36 / 3 = 12. The calculator shows these exact steps for whichever of the four positions you mark as unknown.
What is cross multiplication?
Cross multiplication is the rule that in any true proportion a/b = c/d, the product of one diagonal equals the product of the other: a × d = b × c. It works because multiplying both sides of the equation by b × d clears both denominators. It is the fastest way both to solve a proportion and to test whether two ratios are equal.
How do I know if two ratios form a proportion?
Cross-multiply and compare. For 6/9 and 8/12, 6 × 12 = 72 and 9 × 8 = 72, so they are proportional. For 4/6 and 6/8, 4 × 8 = 32 but 6 × 6 = 36, so they are not. A percent proportion writes a percentage problem as part/whole = percent/100. Can the unknown be in the denominator?
Yes. The unknown can sit in any of the four positions. If x is a denominator, cross multiplication still applies: for 5/x = 20/48, 5 × 48 = 20 × x, so x = 240 / 20 = 12. Tap the letter of the position you want to solve for and the calculator rearranges the formula accordingly.
Why does the calculator say a value cannot be zero?
Solving a proportion always ends with a division. If the number you would divide by is zero, there is no finite answer. For a/b = c/x with a = 0, the equation becomes 0 × x = b × c, which has no solution unless b × c is also zero, and then every x works. The calculator flags this instead of showing an infinite or undefined result.
Does the order of the four numbers matter?
Yes. A proportion compares like to like, so the same kind of quantity must be in the same position on both sides. If 2 cups of flour make 36 cookies, the proportion is 2/36 = x/60 (flour over cookies on both sides). Writing 2/36 = 60/x flips one side and gives a wrong answer. Keep units aligned top-to-top and bottom-to-bottom.

How does a proportion solve a map scale or a model scale problem?
A scale is itself a ratio, so any scaled measurement is a proportion problem. On a map where 1 inch represents 25 miles, 3.5 inches represents 1/25 = 3.5/x, so x = 87.5 miles. On a 1 : 48 model, an 18-inch model part is 1/48 = 18/x, so the real part is 864 inches, or 72 feet.
What is a scale factor and how does the calculator show it?
The scale factor is the number that turns the left ratio into the right one: c ÷ a (or equivalently d ÷ b). In 3/4 = 9/12 the scale factor is 9 ÷ 3 = 3, because both terms on the right are 3 times the terms on the left. Is this the same as a direct variation or unit rate problem?
Closely related. A proportion assumes the two quantities vary directly, meaning doubling one doubles the other. A unit rate is a proportion where the second term is 1: if 320 miles use 10 gallons, then 320/10 = x/1 gives 32 miles per gallon, and 320/10 = x/12.5 gives 400 miles on 12.5 gallons.
