Birthday Calculator
The weekday you were born, your exact age and the days to your next birthday
A birthday calculator turns a date of birth into the weekday you were born, your exact age and a countdown to your next birthday. Someone born on March 14, 1996 was born on a Thursday; on October 10, 2026 they are 30 years, 6 months and 26 days old (11,167 days), and their next birthday, Sunday, March 14, 2027, is 155 days away.
Last updated October 2026
Method: Weekdays and day counts come from Julian Day Numbers (the Fliegel and Van Flandern algorithm) in the Gregorian calendar. Exact age counts completed years, months and days by the same rule as the Age Calculator, and February 29 rolls over to March 1 in common years. The Chinese zodiac uses Hong Kong Observatory Lunar New Year dates (1901 to 2100), birthstones follow the GIA list and zodiac signs use the common fixed date ranges.
Included: Weekday of birth, exact age, total months, weeks, days and hours, next birthday and its weekday, days until it, half-birthday, zodiac sign, Chinese zodiac animal and element, birthstones, 14 milestone dates and your next 12 birthdays.
Not included: Time zones and daylight saving time (whole local calendar days), conversion of old Julian-calendar dates, and any astrological reading.

Weekdays of the 30 birthdays you have had so far
Birthday calculator: the day you were born and the days to your next birthday
This page is about the birthday itself: the weekday it fell on, when it comes around next and which dates along the way deserve a celebration. For age as of any date, the Age Calculator is the lighter tool. Every example below can be reproduced with the calculator above.
How the calculator finds the day you were born
Every date is turned into a Julian Day Number, a running count of days used in astronomy. Because the count rises by exactly one per day, the weekday is its remainder after dividing by seven: weekday = (JDN + 1) mod 7, where 0 is Sunday. March 14, 1996 has the day number 2,450,157, and 2,450,158 mod 7 = 4, a Thursday. Days lived, countdowns and milestones are then simple subtraction and addition. Exact age follows the same rule as the sister Age Calculator: a month is complete on the same day of the month as the birthday, or on the 1st of the next month when that day does not exist, so a January 31 birthday completes its first month on March 1.
Zeller's congruence: the weekday formula you can do by hand
Before computers, the standard paper method was Zeller's congruence, a 19th-century formula that works for any Gregorian date:
h = (q + ⌊13(m + 1) ÷ 5⌋ + K + ⌊K ÷ 4⌋ + ⌊J ÷ 4⌋ + 5J) mod 7 h: 0 = Saturday, 1 = Sunday, 2 = Monday ... 6 = Friday q is the day, m the month, K the last two digits of the year and J the century. January and February count as months 13 and 14 of the previous year. For March 14, 1996: h = (14 + 10 + 96 + 24 + 4 + 95) mod 7 = 243 mod 7 = 5, a Thursday.
Worked example: born on Pi Day, March 14, 1996
Enter March 14, 1996 and count up to October 10, 2026. The calculator returns:
- Born on a Thursday. March 14 is a "doomsday" date, and 1996's doomsday was a Thursday.
- Exact age: 30 years, 6 months, 26 days, which is 11,167 days, 1,595 weeks and 2 days, 366 months or 268,008 hours.
- Next birthday: Sunday, March 14, 2027, in 155 days, turning 31. Next half-birthday: Tuesday, September 14, 2027, in 339 days.
- Pisces, Chinese zodiac Fire Rat (Lunar New Year was February 19, 1996), birthstones aquamarine and bloodstone.
Worked example: January 28, 2006 and the Lunar New Year trap
For a January birthday, Zeller's formula needs m = 13 and the year 2005: q = 28, K = 5, J = 20, so h = (28 + 36 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 100) mod 7 = 175 mod 7 = 0, a Saturday. Using m = 1 and 2006 would give the wrong day.
The same date is a classic Chinese zodiac mistake. Charts list 2006 as the Year of the Dog, but the animal changes on Lunar New Year, January 29, 2006. Born one day earlier, this person is a Rooster (Wood Rooster, Yi-you). On October 10, 2026 they are 20 years, 8 months and 12 days old, exactly 7,560 days or 1,080 weeks, with their next birthday on Thursday, January 28, 2027, 110 days away.
Days until your birthday, half-birthdays and February 29
The countdown does not include the starting day, so a birthday tomorrow is 1 day away and a birthday today reads Today. A half-birthday is six calendar months later; when that month is shorter, the date slides to its last day, so August 29, 30 and 31 birthdays share a half-birthday on February 28 in a common year.
Someone born on February 29, 2004 (a Sunday) has a real birthday only in leap years; the next is Tuesday, February 29, 2028. In common years the calculator rolls the date to March 1, so on October 10, 2026 the countdown shows Monday, March 1, 2027, 142 days away. Exact age follows the same rule: on February 28, 2026 the person was 21 years, 11 months and 30 days old, turning 22 on March 1.
Your birthday's weekday from year to year
A common year is 52 weeks and 1 day, so a birthday moves one weekday later each year, or two after a February 29. Between 1901 and 2099 the pattern repeats every 28 years, as the March 14, 1996 birthday shows:
| Age (year) | Weekday | Age (year) | Weekday | Age (year) | Weekday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (1996) | Thursday | 10 (2006) | Tuesday | 20 (2016) | Monday |
| 1 (1997) | Friday | 11 (2007) | Wednesday | 21 (2017) | Tuesday |
| 2 (1998) | Saturday | 12 (2008) | Friday | 22 (2018) | Wednesday |
| 3 (1999) | Sunday | 13 (2009) | Saturday | 23 (2019) | Thursday |
| 4 (2000) | Tuesday | 14 (2010) | Sunday | 24 (2020) | Saturday |
| 5 (2001) | Wednesday | 15 (2011) | Monday | 25 (2021) | Sunday |
| 6 (2002) | Thursday | 16 (2012) | Wednesday | 26 (2022) | Monday |
| 7 (2003) | Friday | 17 (2013) | Thursday | 27 (2023) | Tuesday |
| 8 (2004) | Sunday | 18 (2014) | Friday | 28 (2024) | Thursday |
| 9 (2005) | Monday | 19 (2015) | Saturday |
For mental math, use John Conway's doomsday rule. Each year, 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, 5/9, 9/5, 7/11, 11/7, 3/14 and the last day of February share one weekday, as does January 3 (January 4 in leap years). Find the year below and count from the nearest anchor: in 2006 the doomsday is Tuesday, so January 31 is a Tuesday and January 28 a Saturday.

Milestones: 10,000 days, a billion seconds and more
Round numbers of days, weeks and seconds make good excuses for a party. In years they arrive at: 10 million minutes at 19.01, 1,000 weeks at 19.17, 10,000 days at 27.38, 1 billion seconds at 31.69, 20,000 days at 54.76 and 2 billion seconds at 63.38. Week milestones always land on the weekday you were born. For the March 14, 1996 example, assuming a midnight birth:
| Milestone | Length | Date for a March 14, 1996 birth |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 hours | 4,166 days, 16 hours | Friday, August 10, 2007, 4:00 p.m. |
| 10 million minutes | 6,944 days, 10 h 40 min | Thursday, March 19, 2015, 10:40 a.m. |
| 1,000 weeks | 7,000 days | Thursday, May 14, 2015 |
| 10,000 days | 10,000 days | Monday, July 31, 2023 |
| 1 billion seconds | 11,574 days, 1 h 46 min 40 s | Sunday, November 21, 2027, 1:46 a.m. |
| 500 months | 41 years, 8 months | Saturday, November 14, 2037 |
| 20,000 days | 20,000 days | Friday, December 16, 2050 |
| 2 billion seconds | 23,148 days, 3 h 33 min 20 s | Wednesday, July 30, 2059, 3:33 a.m. |
Zodiac signs, Chinese zodiac and birthstones
The calculator adds three cultural labels without interpretation. Zodiac signs use the common fixed date ranges; tables can differ by a day near a boundary, so the tool flags boundary dates. As NASA notes, astrology is not astronomy and its claims are not based on scientific evidence. Birthstones follow the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
| Birth month | Zodiac signs that month | Birthstones (GIA) |

| January | Capricorn 1-19, Aquarius 20-31 | Garnet |
| February | Aquarius 1-18, Pisces 19-29 | Amethyst |

How to use it, and who it is for
- Enter the date of birth. The three example buttons load the dates used on this page.
- Leave "count up to" on today, or pick another date to see the age and countdown as of that day.
- Add a time of birth if you know it; it only affects the hour, minute and second milestones.
- Scroll down for the details table, milestones, your next 12 birthdays and past birthday weekdays.
Parents use it to plan parties that land on a weekend, friends to spot a 10,000-day or billion-second celebration, genealogists to check an ancestor's birth weekday against a family record, and teachers to show how modular arithmetic turns a calendar into a formula.
Key terms
- Julian Day Number: a continuous day count; the difference of two is an exact number of days.
- Doomsday: the weekday shared by 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12 and the other anchor dates of a year.
- Half-birthday: the date six calendar months after a birthday.
- Lunar New Year: the first day of the Chinese lunar year, when the zodiac animal changes.
What changes the result
Time zones matter near midnight: a baby born at 11:30 p.m. in California was born on the next calendar day in New York. Daylight saving time can shift minute and second milestones by an hour, which the calculator ignores. Very old dates are another case: Britain and its American colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, when September 2 was followed by September 14. George Washington was born on February 11, 1731 by the old calendar, which is February 22, 1732 in today's calendar, a Friday. The calculator reads every date as Gregorian.
Tips and limitations
- Double-check the year: 2096 instead of 1996 still returns a valid weekday, just for the wrong century.
- For a January or February birth, read the Lunar New Year note before trusting a printed Chinese zodiac chart.
- Results use whole local calendar days, except the milestones when you enter a time of birth.
- Signs, animals and birthstones are traditions; the tool makes no claims about personality or luck. The Chinese zodiac covers 1901 to 2100.

โ ๏ธ Common mistakes & edge cases
Using month 1 for January in Zeller's formula
January and February are months 13 and 14 of the previous year. For January 28, 2006 use m = 13 and 2005, or the answer is off by days.
Counting the starting day in "days until"
October 10, 2026 to March 14, 2027 is 155 days. Counting both ends gives 156, the usual reason hand counts disagree with calculators.
Taking the Chinese zodiac from the calendar year
The animal changes on Lunar New Year. A January 28, 2006 birth is a Rooster, not a Dog, because the new lunar year began the next day.
Forgetting that February 29 needs a rule
This calculator uses March 1 in common years. If your family celebrates on February 28, the party is a day earlier than shown.
Ignoring the time zone of the birth
Use the date on the birth certificate, which records the local date where the birth took place.
Entering old Julian-calendar dates directly
Records from before 1752 in British America often use the old calendar; Washington's February 11, 1731 is February 22, 1732 today.
❓ Frequently asked questions
What day of the week was I born?
Enter your date of birth and the weekday appears at the top of the result. The calculator converts the date to a Julian Day Number and takes (JDN + 1) mod 7, where 0 means Sunday. March 14, 1996 was a Thursday, January 28, 2006 a Saturday and February 29, 2004 a Sunday.
How many days until my birthday?
The calculator finds your next birthday on or after today and subtracts the two dates. On October 10, 2026, a March 14 birthday is 155 days away (Sunday, March 14, 2027) and a January 28 birthday is 110 days away (Thursday, January 28, 2027). On the birthday itself the countdown reads Today.
How can I work out the day of the week for any date by hand?
Use Zeller's congruence: h = (q + floor(13(m + 1) / 5) + K + floor(K / 4) + floor(J / 4) + 5J) mod 7, with q the day, m the month (January and February count as months 13 and 14 of the previous year), K the year within the century and J the century. h = 0 is Saturday and 6 is Friday. For March 14, 1996 the sum is 243, and 243 mod 7 = 5, a Thursday.
What is a half-birthday?
The date six calendar months after your birthday, so a March 14 birthday has its half-birthday on September 14. If that month is shorter, the date moves to its last day: an August 31 birthday has its half-birthday on February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.
When will I be 10,000 days old?
About 27 years and four and a half months after birth (27.38 years). Someone born on March 14, 1996 turned 10,000 days old on Monday, July 31, 2023; someone born on January 28, 2006 reaches it on Wednesday, June 15, 2033.
When will I be 1 billion seconds old?
One billion seconds is 11,574 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes and 40 seconds, about 31.7 years. Born at midnight on March 14, 1996, you reach it on Sunday, November 21, 2027 at 1:46:40 a.m. A late-evening birth can push it one day later, so the calculator accepts an optional time of birth.
What is my Chinese zodiac sign if I was born in January or February?
It depends on Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20; the animal changes then, not on January 1. Someone born on January 28, 2006 arrived one day before Lunar New Year (January 29, 2006), so their animal is the Rooster, not the Dog. The calculator uses Hong Kong Observatory dates for 1901 to 2100.
When do February 29 babies celebrate in common years?
Families pick February 28 or March 1. This calculator uses March 1, the date a February 29 rolls over to, for both the countdown and the exact age, and it also shows the next real February 29 birthday: for someone born on February 29, 2004, that is Tuesday, February 29, 2028.
What is my birthstone?
The modern GIA list: January garnet; February amethyst; March aquamarine and bloodstone; April diamond; May emerald; June pearl, moonstone and alexandrite; July ruby; August peridot, spinel and sardonyx; September sapphire; October opal and tourmaline; November topaz and citrine; December turquoise, tanzanite and zircon.
Does my birthday fall on the same weekday every year?
No. It moves one weekday later each year and two when a February 29 falls in between. The same weekday returns after 5, 6 or 11 years, and between 1901 and 2099 the pattern repeats every 28 years. A March 14 birthday was a Thursday in 1996, 2002, 2013, 2019 and 2024.
๐ก Good to know
Pi Day is always a doomsday
March 14 shares its weekday with 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10 and 12/12 every year. In 2026 all of them fall on a Saturday.
The birthday paradox
In a group of 23 people the chance that two share a birthday is 50.7%, assuming 365 equally likely birthdays; with 50 people it is 97.0%.
Every weekday gets its turn
Over any 28 consecutive years between 1901 and 2099, a birthday falls on each day of the week exactly four times.
