Age Difference Calculator
The exact age gap between two people in years, months and days
Last updated September 6, 2026
Method: The gap is the exact calendar distance between the two birth dates, computed with year, month and day borrowing, so every leap day inside the span is counted. Milestone ages 62, 65 and 67 follow Social Security Administration and Medicare eligibility rules.
Included: Age gap in years, months and days; total months, weeks, days and hours; who is older; both ages on any date you choose; a milestone table; and the gap as a shrinking share of the younger person’s age.
Not included: Time of birth, time zones and daylight saving shifts, and any legal test of age. Results are calendar arithmetic, not legal advice.
๐ฅ Two birth dates
The age gap itself never changes - only the two ages shown for the selected date do.

๐ Ages at milestones
When the older person (Person A) reaches each milestone, the younger person (Person B) is:
| Older turns | Date | Younger is then |
|---|---|---|
| 18Legal adulthood in most states | Mar 14, 2006 | 13 yr 6 mo |
| 21Full legal adulthood everywhere | Mar 14, 2009 | 16 yr 6 mo |
| 30 | Mar 14, 2018 | 25 yr 6 mo |
| 40 | Mar 14, 2028 | 35 yr 6 mo |
| 50 | Mar 14, 2038 | 45 yr 6 mo |
| 62Earliest Social Security retirement benefits | Mar 14, 2050 | 57 yr 6 mo |
| 65Medicare eligibility | Mar 14, 2053 | 60 yr 6 mo |
| 67Full retirement age (born 1960 or later) | Mar 14, 2055 | 62 yr 6 mo |
Greyed rows are milestones the older person has already passed.
๐ The gap in relative terms
The gap in years never changes, but it becomes a smaller share of both lives over time.
| Younger is | Older is | Gap as share of younger age |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 14 | 44.7% |
| 20 | 24 | 22.4% |
| 30 | 34 | 14.9% |
| 40 | 44 | 11.2% |
| 50 | 54 | 8.9% |
| 60 | 64 | 7.5% |
| 70 | 74 | 6.4% |
The difference is computed from real calendar dates with month and day borrowing, so leap days are counted automatically. Dates are handled in your local time zone; nothing is uploaded. Milestone notes for ages 62, 65 and 67 follow the Social Security Administration and Medicare eligibility rules.
Age difference calculator: everything you need to know
An age difference calculator measures the exact gap between two birth dates in years, months and days, and converts it into total months, weeks and days. Someone born March 14, 1988 and someone born September 2, 1992 are 4 years, 5 months and 19 days apart, which is exactly 1,633 days, 233 weeks plus 2 days, or 53 whole months.
The number people usually quote, "we are four years apart", is a rounded version of that span. The calculator on this page keeps the remainder, tells you which person is older, shows both ages on any date you pick, and projects the pair forward to the milestone birthdays that matter for planning.
How the age difference is calculated
The gap between two people is simply the distance between their birth dates, so the earlier date is the start of the span and the later date is the end. Working from the larger date down, the calculation is:
Gap = (Y2 − Y1) years, (M2 − M1) months, (D2 − D1) days with two corrections. If the day figure comes out negative, borrow the number of days in the calendar month immediately before the later birth date and subtract one from the month figure. If the month figure is then negative, add 12 to it and subtract one from the year figure. Because the borrow uses the real length of the real month, February and the 31-day months are handled correctly and leap days need no special treatment at all.
The total day count is a separate, simpler calculation, and it is the one that never carries any ambiguity:
Total days = later date − earlier date Total weeks is that day count divided by seven, keeping the whole part and the remainder. Total months is the year figure multiplied by 12 plus the month figure. Total hours is the day count multiplied by 24, which ignores the time of day both people were born, since that is almost never recorded on the documents you have.
Worked example: a gap of 4 years, 5 months and 19 days
Person A was born on March 14, 1988, a Monday. Person B was born on September 2, 1992, a Wednesday. Person A is older, because March 1988 comes before September 1992.
Start with the raw subtraction: 1992 − 1988 = 4 years, 9 − 3 = 6 months, and 2 − 14 = −12 days. The day figure is negative, so borrow the length of the month before September, which is August with 31 days: −12 + 31 = 19 days, and the month count drops from 6 to 5. Nothing is negative any more, so the exact gap is 4 years, 5 months and 19 days.
The totals follow directly. The two dates are 1,633 days apart, which is 233 weeks and 2 days (1,633 ÷ 7 = 233 remainder 2) and 39,192 hours (1,633 × 24). Expressed in whole months the gap is 4 × 12 + 5 = 53 months.
On September 6, 2026, Person A is 38 years, 5 months and 23 days old, and Person B is 34 years, 0 months and 4 days old. The gap of 1,633 days is 13.1% of Person B’s current age, and Person A is 1.13 times as old as Person B. Person B reaches Person A’s current age on February 25, 2031, which is simply today plus 1,633 days.
Age gap in years converted to days, weeks and months
When two people share a birthday but were born in different years, the gap is a whole number of years and the conversion is clean. The table below assumes the older person was born on June 15, 1990 and the younger on June 15 of a later year, and it counts the real calendar days, leap days included, so the day figures are exact rather than an average.
| Gap in years | Total months | Total weeks | Total days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 12 | 52 | 365 |
| 2 years | 24 | 104 | 731 |
| 3 years | 36 | 156 | 1,096 |
| 5 years | 60 | 260 | 1,826 |
| 7 years | 84 | 365 | 2,557 |
| 10 years | 120 | 521 | 3,653 |
| 15 years | 180 | 782 | 5,479 |
| 20 years | 240 | 1,043 | 7,305 |
| 25 years | 300 | 1,304 | 9,131 |
Notice the pattern in the day column: each year adds 365 days, and a leap day is added every fourth year, so a four year block is 1,461 days rather than 1,460. If the two birthdays fall on different calendar days, the totals shift by the number of days between those two positions in the year, which is exactly what the calculator above works out for you.
How to use this calculator
Enter the first date of birth in the Person A field and the second in the Person B field. The order does not matter: the calculator sorts the dates and always reports the gap as a positive span, naming whichever person was born first as the older one. The result updates as you type, so there is nothing to submit.
The headline card gives the gap in years, months and days, with total months, weeks, days and hours underneath. Below it, the ages card shows how old each person is on a chosen date. Leave the control on Today for the current ages, or switch to Another date to look at a wedding date, a retirement date or a date in the past. The gap never moves when you do that; only the two ages change.
The milestone table then walks the pair forward: for each of the ages 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 62, 65 and 67, it gives the date the older person reaches that age and how old the younger person is at that moment. The last table converts the fixed gap into a percentage of the younger person’s age at a series of ages, which is the clearest way to see that a gap that feels enormous at 18 barely registers at 60.
Who this calculator is for
- Couples who want the exact gap rather than the rounded version, and who are planning around two different Medicare and Social Security timelines.
- Parents spacing children, comparing siblings, or working out which school year each child lands in.
- Genealogists reconstructing family trees from census entries, gravestones and birth records, where the gap between two dates is often the check that a record belongs to the right person.
- HR and benefits staff checking dependent ages, spouse ages on a plan, or the interval between two employees’ birth dates for a service calculation.
- Anyone curious about a milestone: the day two friends are exactly 10,000 days apart, or the date a younger sibling turns the age an older sibling is today.
Key terms
- Age gap (age difference): the calendar distance between two birth dates. It is fixed at birth and never changes.
- Exact difference: the gap written as whole years, then whole months, then leftover days, using real month lengths.
- Total days: the true count of calendar days between the two dates, including every February 29 in the span.
- Borrowing: the correction applied when the day or month subtraction comes out negative, taking a month or a year from the next column up.
- Relative gap: the fixed gap expressed as a percentage of the younger person’s current age. It falls every year even though the gap itself is constant.
- Catch-up date: the date on which the younger person reaches the age the older person is today, which is always today plus the gap in days.
- Full retirement age: the age at which Social Security pays an unreduced retirement benefit, which is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later.
Milestone table for the worked example
Using the same pair, Person A born March 14, 1988 and Person B born September 2, 1992, the table shows the date Person A reaches each milestone and Person B’s exact age on that date. Every row keeps the same 4 year, 5 month, 19 day distance, which is why Person B is always 5 months and 12 days past a birthday when Person A hits a round number.
| Person A turns | On | Person B is then |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | Mar 14, 2006 | 13 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 21 | Mar 14, 2009 | 16 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 30 | Mar 14, 2018 | 25 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 40 | Mar 14, 2028 | 35 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 50 | Mar 14, 2038 | 45 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 62 (earliest Social Security) | Mar 14, 2050 | 57 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 65 (Medicare) | Mar 14, 2053 | 60 yr 6 mo 12 d |
| 67 (full retirement age) | Mar 14, 2055 | 62 yr 6 mo 12 d |
The practical reading of the last three rows: when Person A becomes eligible for Medicare in March 2053, Person B still has four and a half years of coverage to arrange somewhere else. That single line is the reason couples with a gap of any size should look at the two timelines separately rather than as one household date.
Why the same gap feels smaller every year
A gap of 4 years, 5 months and 19 days is fixed, but its weight is not. Divide the 1,633 day gap by the younger person’s age in days and the share falls steadily, which is the arithmetic behind the common observation that a large gap between teenagers stops mattering in middle age.
| Younger person is | Older person is | Gap as share of younger age |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 14 | 44.7% |
| 20 | 24 | 22.4% |
| 30 | 34 | 14.9% |
| 40 | 44 | 11.2% |
| 50 | 54 | 8.9% |
| 60 | 64 | 7.5% |
| 70 | 74 | 6.4% |
The share falls roughly in proportion to age: doubling the younger person’s age roughly halves the percentage, from 44.7% at 10 to 22.4% at 20 and 11.2% at 40. The absolute distance in days never moves.
What changes the result
- The exact calendar days, not just the years. Two people born in 1988 and 1992 can be anywhere from 3 years, 0 months and 1 day apart (1,096 days) to 4 years, 11 months and 30 days apart (1,826 days), depending on the months and days involved.
- Leap days inside the span. Each February 29 in the interval adds one day to the total, which is why a four year gap is 1,461 days and not 1,460.
- Which month you borrow from. The borrow uses the length of the month before the later birth date, so a gap ending in March borrows 28 or 29 days while one ending in April borrows 31.
- The reference date you choose. It does not touch the gap, but it changes both ages, the relative share and the catch-up date shown next to them.
- Time of birth. The calculator works in whole days. Two babies born nine hours apart on the same date show a gap of zero days here, even though one is technically older.
Tips for getting a useful answer
- For a gap under a year, read the days and weeks rather than the months. "Seven months apart" hides a range of about 30 days.
- Copy birth dates from the actual documents. A birth certificate, a passport and a family bible sometimes disagree, and the gap is only as good as the weaker of the two dates.
- Use the future reference date to answer planning questions directly: set it to the month you intend to retire and read both ages off the card.
- When you compare a whole family, run the pairs you care about one at a time and note the day totals. Gaps add up cleanly in days but not in months.
- If someone was born on February 29, check both the February 28 and the March 1 reading in a common year, because different institutions use different conventions for the birthday itself.
Limitations
- The calculator ignores time of birth and works in whole calendar days, so it cannot rank twins born minutes apart.
- It uses local dates and does not adjust for time zones, daylight saving or a birth recorded in another country’s local time.
- It applies the proleptic Gregorian calendar to every date, so genealogical dates from before the 1752 British and colonial calendar switch may not match a historical record.
- It reports arithmetic only. Any legal question about age, consent, marriage or benefits is governed by state or federal law and by the definitions the relevant agency uses, not by this page.
- The months and days portion follows one standard borrowing convention. Another tool that borrows differently can report the same span as, for example, 4 years, 5 months and 19 days or 4 years, 5 months and 20 days, while the day total always agrees.
How it compares to related calculators
This page answers one question: how far apart are two birth dates? If you have a different question, a sister tool fits better:
- To find how old one person is today, on a past date or on a future date, use the Age Calculator.
- To measure the span between any two calendar dates that are not birth dates, such as a start date and an anniversary, use the Date Calculator.
- To count only working days between two dates, use the Business Days Calculator.
- To count down to a birthday or another event, use the Countdown Calculator.
- To add hours or days to a date and time rather than measure a gap, use the Date and Time Calculator.
In short: use the Age Calculator for one person, this age gap calculator for two people, and the Date Calculator when neither date is a birthday.

โ ๏ธ Common mistakes & edge cases
Subtracting birth years only
1992 − 1988 = 4 suggests a four year gap, but the real distance is 4 years, 5 months and 19 days. Year subtraction can be off by nearly a full year in either direction, which matters as soon as school years or benefit dates are involved.
Converting months with a fixed 30 days
Treating a month as 30 days turns 53 months into 1,590 days, but the true count is 1,633 days, a miss of 43 days. Always convert through real calendar dates, never through an average month length.
Forgetting leap days
A four year gap between the same calendar days is 1,461 days, not 1,460, because one February 29 falls inside it. Over a 20 year gap the difference is five days: 7,305 rather than 7,300.
Assuming the gap changes
People often say a gap "gets smaller with age". The gap in years and days is fixed at birth. What shrinks is the gap as a share of the younger person’s age, from 44.7% at age 10 to 8.9% at age 50 in our example.
Mixing up the two dates
Entering the younger person first is harmless here, because the calculator sorts the dates. Doing the same subtraction by hand produces a negative span that is easy to misread, so always confirm which date is earlier before you trust a manual result.
Treating the gap as a legal test
Age of consent, marriage and benefit rules are set by state and federal law, and several use definitions that this calculator does not model. Use the arithmetic here for planning and curiosity, and the relevant statute or agency for anything official.
❓ Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the age difference between two people?
Take the two dates of birth and treat the earlier one as the start of a span that ends on the later one. Subtract the years, then the months, then the days. If the day result is negative, borrow the number of days in the calendar month before the later birth date and reduce the month count by one; if the month result is then negative, borrow 12 months and reduce the year count by one. What remains is the exact gap in years, months and days. For March 14, 1988 and September 2, 1992 that is 4 years, 5 months and 19 days, or 1,633 days.
Does the age gap change over time?
No. The distance between two birth dates is fixed forever, so two people born 1,633 days apart stay 1,633 days apart for life. What changes is the gap in relative terms: a 4 year, 5 month gap is 44.7% of the younger person's age when they are 10, but only 8.9% when they are 50. The calculator shows both the fixed gap and that shrinking share.
How many days apart are two people born exactly four years apart?
If both were born on the same calendar day four years apart, the gap is 1,461 days, because a four year span normally contains one leap day (4 x 365 + 1). A one year gap on the same calendar day is usually 365 days, a two year gap 731 days, and a ten year gap 3,653 days. The exact figure depends on how many February 29ths fall inside the span.
Does the calculator handle leap years?
Yes. Because the result is computed from real calendar dates rather than an average year length, every February 29 inside the span is counted automatically. A person born February 29, 1996 and one born March 1, 1999 are exactly 3 years, 0 months and 0 days apart, which is 1,096 days rather than 1,095.
How is an age gap counted when someone was born on February 29?
In a common year there is no February 29, so the milestone birthday rolls to February 28 or March 1 depending on the convention. This calculator clamps a February 29 birthday to February 28 when it projects milestone dates into a non leap year, and the day count between the two birth dates is always exact regardless of the convention used for birthdays.
What is the age difference in months and weeks?
Total months is the year count times 12 plus the leftover months, so a gap of 4 years and 5 months is 53 months. Total weeks is the exact day count divided by seven, taking the whole part: 1,633 days is 233 weeks plus 2 days. Days and weeks are the honest units for a gap under a year, because month lengths vary from 28 to 31 days.
Who is older if the two birth dates are only days apart?
The person with the earlier calendar date is older, even by one day. The calculator sorts the two dates automatically, labels the earlier one as the older person, and reports the gap as a positive number, so the order in which you type the dates does not matter.
Can I see how old each person will be on a future date?
Yes. Switch the 'show both ages as of' control from Today to Another date and pick any past or future date. The calculator then shows each person's exact age on that date. The age difference itself stays the same, because it is a property of the two birth dates and not of the date you are looking from.
What does the milestone table show?
It lists the dates on which the older person reaches 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 62, 65 and 67, and how old the younger person is on each of those dates. Ages 62, 65 and 67 matter for planning: 62 is the earliest age to claim Social Security retirement benefits, 65 is when Medicare eligibility begins, and 67 is the full retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later.
Why does an age gap matter for retirement and Medicare planning?
Because eligibility follows each person's own birth date, not the household's. In a couple with a 4 year, 5 month gap, one spouse can reach 65 and Medicare eligibility while the other still has more than four years of private coverage to arrange. The same gap separates the two Social Security claiming decisions, which is why couples often stagger them.
Is the age difference calculator the same as an age calculator?
No. An age calculator measures one birth date against a target date and tells you how old that person is. An age difference calculator measures two birth dates against each other and tells you how far apart they are. Use the Age Calculator for a single person and this page when you are comparing two people.
What is the 'half your age plus seven' rule?
It is an old social rule of thumb, not a law or a scientific finding: the lower bound for a socially accepted partner age is said to be half your age plus seven, so a 30 year old lands at 22 and a 40 year old at 27. It has no legal standing anywhere in the United States, where age of consent and marriage rules are set by state statute. This calculator reports the arithmetic gap only.
How accurate is this age difference calculator?
The day count is exact: it is the true number of calendar days between the two dates, leap days included. The years, months and days breakdown uses standard calendar borrowing, which is the same method used by age calculators generally. Because month lengths differ, a gap expressed in months and days can look slightly different from another tool that borrows in a different order, while the day total always agrees.
Is this age gap calculator free to use?
Yes. There is no sign up, no fee, and no limit on how many pairs of dates you can compare. Everything runs in your browser, so the birth dates you enter are never sent to a server.
๐ก Good to know
The day count is the only number that never argues
Years, months and days depend on a borrowing convention, so two tools can disagree by a day on the months portion. The total number of calendar days between two birth dates is unambiguous, which is why it is worth writing down alongside the friendlier "four and a half years".
An age gap splits a couple’s Medicare timeline
Medicare eligibility starts around age 65 for each person individually, so a gap of four years and five months leaves the younger spouse needing more than four extra years of coverage. Social Security works the same way: 62 is the earliest claiming age and 67 the full retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later, both measured per person.
Day milestones make better anniversaries than years
Because the gap is a fixed number of days, so is every shared milestone. Add 10,000 days to the younger person’s birth date and you get a date that is exactly as far from the older person’s 10,000th day as the two of them have always been: 1,633 days in our example.
