Date and time calculator: everything you need to know
A date and time calculator adds or subtracts days, hours, minutes and seconds from a specific moment and tells you exactly where you land, weekday included. For example, September 5, 2026 at 2:30 PM plus 3 days, 7 hours and 45 minutes is Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 10:15 PM, a total offset of 79.75 hours. A second mode measures the precise duration between any two date-times.
Two neighboring tools cover the simpler halves of the problem. The Date Calculator works on whole calendar dates and adds weeks, months or years, so use it for deadlines that are counted in days without a clock time. Two modes, two questions
- Add / subtract from a date and time: start with a date and a clock time, choose Add or Subtract, and enter any mix of days, hours, minutes and seconds. The headline shows the resulting clock time and full date with its weekday, plus the total offset in hours and minutes and the number of calendar days crossed.
- Difference between two date-times: enter a from and a to moment. The headline shows the gap as days, hours, minutes and seconds; the tiles give total hours, total minutes, total seconds and decimal days, and the breakdown card adds weeks and the weekdays of both ends.
How the calculation works
Every offset is first reduced to seconds. The conversion is fixed, because a minute always has 60 seconds, an hour 60 minutes and a day 24 hours:
total seconds = days × 86,400 + hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds The calculator then applies that offset to the start moment. Days are moved on the calendar, which keeps the clock reading unchanged; hours, minutes and seconds are added as exact elapsed time on the underlying timestamp. The result is converted back into a local date, time and weekday by your browser. For the difference mode the formula runs in reverse:
elapsed seconds = end timestamp − start timestamp, then split into days, hours, minutes, seconds Splitting is done with whole-number division: days = elapsed ÷ 86,400 rounded down, the remainder ÷ 3,600 gives hours, the next remainder ÷ 60 gives minutes, and whatever is left is seconds.
Worked example: adding days, hours and minutes
Say a 3-day, 7-hour, 45-minute processing window starts on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 2:30 PM. Step by step:
- Convert the offset: 3 × 1,440 + 7 × 60 + 45 = 4,785 minutes, which is 79.75 hours.
- Add the 3 calendar days: Saturday, September 5 becomes Tuesday, September 8, still at 2:30 PM.
- Add 7 hours: 2:30 PM becomes 9:30 PM on the same day.
- Add 45 minutes: 9:30 PM becomes 10:15 PM.
Result: Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 10:15 PM. The calculator also reports 3 calendar days crossed, because the result falls three dates after the start even though the elapsed time is a little more than three full days.
Worked example: subtracting 36 hours
A return must be postmarked 36 hours before a hearing on Monday, September 7, 2026 at 9:00 AM. Subtracting 36 hours moves back one full day to Sunday 9:00 AM, then a further 12 hours to Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 9:00 PM. Counting backward by hand is where most errors happen, because you cross both midnight boundaries and change the weekday twice; the calculator does the borrowing for you.
Worked example: the difference between two moments
A rental starts Monday, June 15, 2026 at 9:00 AM and ends Friday, June 19, 2026 at 5:30 PM. The elapsed time is 376,200 seconds, which the calculator splits into 4 days, 8 hours and 30 minutes. Expressed differently, that is 104.5 hours, 6,270 minutes, or about 4.354 decimal days. Five calendar dates are touched (Monday through Friday), which matters when a rental company bills by calendar day rather than by 24-hour period.

Notice that every multiple of 24 hours keeps the 9:00 AM clock reading and simply steps the weekday forward, while the odd offsets (8, 12, 36 hours) move the clock and may or may not cross midnight.

The second row is an overnight shift: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM crosses midnight and changes the date, yet the elapsed time is a plain 8.5 hours. The last row shows why "one year" is not quite 8,760 hours when the end is 11:59 PM rather than midnight.

Key terms explained
- Elapsed time: the true amount of time that passes between two moments, measured on the underlying timestamp. It is unaffected by clock changes.
- Wall-clock time: what a clock on the wall shows in your local zone. During a daylight saving change the wall clock jumps forward or back an hour while elapsed time keeps flowing normally.
- Calendar day: a date on the calendar from midnight to midnight. Adding a calendar day keeps the same clock reading; adding 24 elapsed hours might not on a clock-change day.
- UTC offset: how far your local zone sits from Coordinated Universal Time, for example UTC-5 for Eastern Standard Time and UTC-4 for Eastern Daylight Time. The calculator shows yours in a result tile.
- Decimal hours: hours written as a decimal (8 h 30 m = 8.50 hours). Payroll and billing systems usually want this form; the calculator reports it in the difference mode.
- Weekday: the day of the week for the resulting date. It is derived directly from the calendar, so it is exact.
Daylight saving time and why days and hours are treated differently
In the United States, clocks spring forward at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday in March and fall back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November under the Uniform Time Act, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 2026 that is Sunday, March 8 and Sunday, November 1. On those two nights a calendar day is 23 or 25 hours long, so "one day later" and "24 hours later" are not the same moment. This calculator keeps the two ideas separate: the days field moves along the calendar and preserves your clock reading, while the hours, minutes and seconds fields measure exact elapsed time. When a change falls inside your span, a notice appears so you can decide which interpretation your situation needs. Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving time, and your browser applies the rules of whatever zone your device is set to.
What changes the result the most
- The start time of day: adding 8 hours to 9:00 AM stays on the same date, but adding 8 hours to 6:00 PM crosses midnight and moves the date and weekday.
- Whether the span crosses a month or year end: the calendar handles 30-, 31- and 28-day months automatically, but hand counting often slips by a day here.
- Whole days versus odd hours: any multiple of 24 hours keeps the clock reading; anything else shifts it, which is what makes weekday questions tricky.
- A daylight saving boundary: exactly one hour of difference between calendar-day and elapsed-hour arithmetic, in either direction.
- Your device's time zone: the same offset gives the same elapsed time everywhere, but the displayed clock time and date follow the zone your device is set to.
Tips for reliable results
- For "within 48 hours" deadlines, start from the exact timestamp of the triggering event. 48 hours from Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 11:59 PM is Saturday, September 12 at 11:59 PM, not "end of Saturday."
- When a rule says "3 business days," use the Business Days Calculator instead; this tool counts weekends.
- Convert long durations with the quick math: 1,000 hours is 41.67 days, so 1,000 hours after January 1, 2026 at midnight is Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 4:00 PM.
- Use seconds only when they matter (timers, lab logs, race splits); leaving the seconds field at 0 keeps the result readable.
- Check the weekday in the result against your expectation; if it looks off, the most common cause is a start time entered as AM instead of PM.
Limitations and assumptions
- All input and output use one time zone: the one your device is set to. The tool does not convert a New York time into a Los Angeles time.
- It counts every calendar day, including weekends and holidays. It is not a business-day tool.
- Units are limited to days, hours, minutes and seconds. For months and years, whose lengths vary, use the Date Calculator.
- Historical dates before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar are computed as if that calendar had always applied.
- Decimal summaries (hours, days, weeks) are rounded for display; the date, weekday and clock time are exact.

An offset of 3 days 7 hours 45 minutes is 3.32 elapsed days, yet it can cross 3 or 4 calendar dates depending on the start time. The calculator reports both so you can match whichever convention a contract or billing rule uses.
The clock-change hour goes both ways
Adding 24 elapsed hours across the March change lands at one clock hour later than the start; across the November change it lands one clock hour earlier. Adding 1 calendar day keeps the same clock reading on both nights.

Mixing up AM and PM
Entering 9:00 AM when you meant 9:00 PM shifts every result by exactly 12 hours and often changes the weekday. Check the summary line under the headline, which repeats your start moment.
Treating 1.5 hours as 1 hour 50 minutes
Decimal hours and minutes are different scales: 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, and 8.75 hours is 8 hours 45 minutes. Type whole hours in the hours field and the remainder in minutes.
Forgetting that an overnight span crosses a date
A shift from Friday 10:00 PM to Saturday 6:30 AM is 8.5 hours, but its end falls on a different date and weekday. Always read the date next to the time, not just the clock reading.
Assuming every day is 24 hours
On the two U.S. clock-change nights a calendar day lasts 23 or 25 hours. If your span includes March 8 or November 1, 2026, look for the daylight saving notice and decide whether you need calendar days or elapsed hours.
Using this tool for business-day deadlines
"Three business days" skips Saturdays, Sundays and often federal holidays. This calculator counts every day, so a 72-hour result can land on a weekend.
Comparing times from two different zones
A 6:20 PM departure and a 7:05 AM arrival are 12 hours 45 minutes apart only if both are in the same zone. Convert both to one zone first, then measure the difference.

Can I subtract time from a date?
Yes. Select 'Subtract' and the same fields move the moment backward. For example, Monday, September 7, 2026 at 9:00 AM minus 36 hours is Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 9:00 PM. Subtracting can cross midnight, month ends and year ends without any manual adjustment.
What happens if the end date-time is before the start?
The difference mode still works. It reports the absolute span so the numbers stay positive and easy to read, and it adds the note 'end is before start' to the summary line so you know the direction.
