Cumulative GPA: how the overall number is built
A cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of every graded course on your transcript, not the average of your semester GPAs. Terms of 3.40 over 15 credits, 3.75 over 16 credits and 2.90 over 12 credits add up to 145.80 quality points across 43 credits, which is a cumulative GPA of 3.39, slightly higher than the plain 3.35 average of those three numbers.

The cumulative GPA formula
Every registrar in the United States uses the same two-step arithmetic. Each term produces quality points, and the cumulative GPA is the sum of those points divided by the sum of the credits:
Cumulative GPA = Σ (term GPA × term credits) ÷ Σ term credits The credit hours are what make this a weighted average rather than a simple one. A 16-credit semester pushes on the result about a third harder than a 12-credit semester with the same GPA, which is why a bad grade in a heavy term costs far more than the same grade in a light one. If you already know your current cumulative GPA, you do not need to re-enter old semesters: treat the whole transcript as a single row, your cumulative GPA and every credit behind it, then add the new term below it.
Worked example: three semesters, step by step
Take a sophomore with three completed terms. Each term GPA is multiplied by its credits, the quality points accumulate, and the running cumulative GPA is recalculated after every term:

145.80 ÷ 43 = 3.3907, which rounds to 3.39. The plain average of 3.40, 3.75 and 2.90 would be 3.35. The gap exists because the worst term was also the lightest, so it carried the least weight. Flip it around, making the 2.90 a 16-credit term and the 3.75 a 12-credit term, and the same three GPAs produce a lower cumulative figure instead.
What GPA do I need next semester?
The second mode answers the planning question. Solve the same equation for the unknown term:
Required term GPA = (target × (old credits + new credits) − old GPA × old credits) ÷ new credits Continuing the example: 43 credits at 3.39 is 145.77 quality points, and the goal is a 3.50 cumulative GPA after a 15-credit term. That means 3.50 × 58 = 203.00 quality points are needed in total, so the coming term must supply 57.23 points across 15 credits, a term GPA of 3.82. Feasible, but it leaves almost no room for a B.
Required term GPA by course load
The size of the coming term changes the answer, because a bigger term carries more weight against the credits already banked. Same starting point, four different course loads:

A nine-credit term simply cannot get there: even a flawless 4.00 across nine credits lands at 3.4956, a hair under the target. That is why the calculator flags an unreachable goal instead of printing a required GPA above the scale maximum. It also shows the reverse trap: a heavier term makes a target easier only if you can actually hold the grades across more courses.
What one semester does to your cumulative GPA
Suppose the transcript reads 3.20 across 45 credits and the next term is 15 credits. Here is the full range of outcomes, computed with the same weighted formula:

Two things stand out. A perfect semester moves this transcript by 0.20, while a 2.00 semester costs 0.30: the downside is bigger than the upside, because falling below your average is easier than clearing 4.00. And a 3.00 semester, which feels respectable, still drags a 3.20 average down. Any term below your current cumulative GPA lowers it, no matter how good the grades feel in isolation.
Why the number gets harder to move over time
Cumulative GPA has inertia. The same 15-credit term has a completely different effect depending on how many credits already sit on the transcript. Starting from a 3.00 cumulative GPA in every row:

A freshman can swing a full grade point in one semester. A senior with 120 credits moves 0.11 in either direction at most. This is the single most useful thing to understand about cumulative GPA: early grades are worth far more than late ones, so repair work started in year one is cheap while repair work started in year four is close to impossible.
How many credits of A work does a target cost?
If one semester is not enough, the useful question becomes how long the climb takes. Rearranged, the formula gives the credits of straight-4.00 work required: credits = (target − current) × current credits ÷ (4.00 − target). For a student who has already earned 60 credits:

Notice how steeply the cost rises as the target approaches 4.00. Moving a 2.50 up to 3.00 takes 30 credits of perfect work, but pushing the same student to 3.50 takes 120 credits, four times as much for twice the improvement. Every tenth of a point closer to the ceiling is more expensive than the last, and a 3.90 target from a 2.50 start would take more credits than a bachelor's degree contains.
How to use this calculator

- Set the scale. 4.00 is the standard unweighted scale. Choose 4.30 if your school awards 4.3 for an A+, or 5.00 if you are entering weighted high-school averages that can exceed 4.00.

Key terms explained
- Quality points: a term's GPA multiplied by its credits. They are the numerator of every GPA calculation, and they are what actually accumulate on a transcript.
- Credit hours: the weight of a course, usually matching its weekly contact hours. A full-time load is typically 12 to 18 credits per semester.
- Term or semester GPA: the average for one term only. It resets every semester.
- Cumulative GPA: the average across all graded terms. It never resets, which is why it moves so slowly.
- Major GPA: a separate average covering only courses in your major. Many departments set a higher minimum for it than the university does for the cumulative figure.
- Attempted vs. earned credits: attempted credits include failed courses, earned credits do not. GPA uses attempted graded credits, which is why an F still counts in the denominator.
- Grade replacement: a repeat policy where a retaken course's new grade replaces the old one in the GPA rather than averaging with it.
Cumulative, semester and major GPA are three different numbers
Students often report the wrong one. Your semester GPA is a snapshot: a 4.00 fall term is worth celebrating, but it is not what a scholarship committee reads. Your cumulative GPA is the transcript-wide figure that decides honors, probation, eligibility and most application forms. Your major GPA covers only the courses in your department, and it can differ from the cumulative number by half a point in either direction, strong in your field but weaker in the general-education requirements, or the reverse. When an application asks for "your GPA" without qualifying it, the cumulative GPA is almost always what is meant, and the transcript will show it anyway.
A second worked example: merging transfer credits
A transfer student finished 30 credits at a community college with a 3.60 GPA, then completed 45 credits at a four-year university at 3.10. If the university folds transfer grades into the GPA, the combined figure is (3.60 × 30 + 3.10 × 45) ÷ 75 = (108.00 + 139.50) ÷ 75 = 3.30. If it accepts the credits but excludes the grades, the official cumulative GPA stays at 3.10 and only the credit count grows. That is a 0.20 difference driven entirely by policy rather than by any grade, so check the registrar's rule before you report a number, and enter only the terms that actually count when you use this calculator.
A third example: climbing off academic probation
A student sits at a 1.90 cumulative GPA over 24 credits, below the 2.00 line that most schools use for good standing. With a 15-credit term ahead, the required term GPA is (2.00 × 39 − 1.90 × 24) ÷ 15 = (78.00 − 45.60) ÷ 15 = 2.16. That is comfortably reachable, roughly a C+ average, and a perfect term would land the cumulative GPA at 2.71. The lesson is that a deficit caught early is small: the same 1.90 with 90 credits behind it would need far more than one term of course work to clear the same line.
What changes the result the most
- Credits already earned: the biggest factor by far. The larger the transcript, the smaller any single term's effect.
- The size of the coming term: 18 credits move the average roughly half again as hard as 12 credits at the same GPA.
- Failing grades: zero quality points while still adding to the denominator. One failed 3-credit course takes a 3.39 over 43 credits down to 3.17.
- Repeat policy: grade replacement can lift a cumulative GPA far faster than any new course can, where grade averaging cannot.
- Which courses are excluded: pass/fail classes, withdrawals and excluded transfer grades change the credit base and therefore the average.
- The scale in use: a 4.30 or 5.00 school produces higher raw numbers that are not directly comparable to a 4.00 transcript.
Practical ways to move the number
- Protect the heavy courses. A grade in a 4-credit lecture counts a third more than the same grade in a 3-credit elective.
- Never let a course become an F. Withdrawing before the deadline usually leaves a W with no grade points and no credits, which is neutral, while an F is the most damaging entry a transcript can carry.
- Fix problems early. Twelve credits of A work at the end of freshman year does what sixty credits cannot do at the end of junior year.
- Use grade replacement if your school offers it, and confirm in writing that the old grade is removed from the GPA rather than averaged in.
- Set a term target before registration, not after. The target mode tells you whether the schedule you are about to pick can even reach the GPA you need.
- Watch the credit load. A lighter term protects grades but also reduces how much that term can lift the average.
Limitations and assumptions
- It assumes every credit you enter is graded and included in your GPA. Pass/fail, audited and withdrawn courses should be left out.
- It cannot know your school's repeat, forgiveness or transfer policies, all of which change which terms belong in the calculation.
- Term GPAs are used exactly as entered, and results are displayed to two decimals. Registrars sometimes truncate instead of rounding, which can differ by 0.01.
- Weighted high-school scales vary widely. The 5.00 option accepts weighted term averages but does not apply Honors or AP bonuses itself.
- It produces an estimate for planning. Your official transcript is the record that scholarships, honors committees and graduate programs read.

Your first year is the cheapest time to build a GPA
A 4.00 semester lifts a 3.00 average to 3.50 when 15 credits are behind you, but only to 3.11 when 120 are. The arithmetic rewards early effort far more than late effort.
Any term below your average pulls it down
A 3.00 semester sounds fine, but on a 3.20 transcript with 45 credits it lowers the cumulative GPA to 3.15. To hold a number steady, the new term has to match it exactly.
Check the policy before you check the math
Transfer grades, repeated courses and pass/fail classes are treated differently at every school. Which terms belong in the calculation matters more than the arithmetic itself.

Averaging semester GPAs without credits
The most common error. A 4.00 in a 3-credit summer term and a 2.00 in a 15-credit fall term average to 3.00 if you ignore credits, but the true cumulative GPA is 2.33, a gap of two thirds of a point.
Counting an old cumulative GPA twice
If your first row is your full transcript at 3.39 over 43 credits, do not also enter the individual semesters that built it. Enter either the summary row or the terms, never both.
Including pass/fail credits
A pass/fail course usually earns credit with no grade points. Adding its credits to the total inflates the denominator and quietly pushes the calculated GPA below what the registrar reports.
Forgetting that an F still carries credits
A failed course adds zero to the numerator and its full credit hours to the denominator. That asymmetry is why one 3-credit F drops a 3.39 to 3.17, while one 3-credit A only lifts it to 3.43.
Assuming a retake erases the old grade
That happens only under a grade-replacement policy. Where grades are averaged, both attempts stay in the cumulative GPA, so a retake helps much less than students expect.
Chasing a target that a single term cannot reach
With 43 credits at 3.39, a nine-credit term tops out at 3.4956 even with straight A's. If the required term GPA comes out above your scale maximum, the target needs two terms, not a harder one.
