Easter 2027
The date, a live countdown and the rule that puts Easter on March 28
Easter Sunday 2027
Easter 2027 falls on Sunday, March 28, 2027, the earliest Easter since March 27, 2016. Good Friday is March 26, Palm Sunday is March 21, and Orthodox Easter comes five weeks later, on Sunday, May 2, 2027.
Easter Sunday 2027 is 178 days from October 1, 2026.
Last updated October 2026
Method: Western Easter is computed with the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm, an exact integer form of the church tables adopted in 1582. Every result from 2015 to 2037 matches the dates computed by the U.S. Naval Observatory. Orthodox Easter uses the Julian computus and matches the Orthodox Church in America's Paschal table. Holy Week and the other movable dates are fixed offsets from Easter Sunday.
Included: The 2027 date and countdown, a step-by-step computation, the dates that depend on Easter, Orthodox Easter, a 10-year table, statistics for 2000 to 2099, and what is open on Good Friday.
Not included: Passover and other holidays set by lunar calendars, individual church service times, and observances outside the United States.
Easter 2027: the date, the rule and the dates around it
Easter has no fixed place on the calendar. It can fall on any Sunday from March 22 to April 25, and each year's date comes from a calculation that combines the calendar with a table of church full moons. For 2027 that calculation produces Sunday, March 28, near the early end of the range. This page explains the rule, works through the 2027 computation and lists the dates that move with Easter. To count down to a different date, use the Countdown Calculator; to add or subtract days from Easter, the Date Calculator.
How the date of Easter is set
The U.S. Naval Observatory states the rule this way: Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. Two details make that different from looking at the sky. The ecclesiastical full moon comes from tables rather than from astronomy, so it keeps roughly in step with the real Moon but can miss it by a day or more. And the spring equinox is fixed at March 21 by rule, even though the astronomical equinox moves slightly from year to year. Western churches use the tables issued with the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582; most Orthodox churches use older tables tied to the Julian calendar.
Because the full moon can fall anywhere in a 29-day window after March 21, and Easter is the Sunday after it, the earliest possible Easter is March 22 and the latest is April 25. Both extremes are rare: Easter last fell on March 22 in 1818 and will not again until 2285, and it last fell on April 25 in 1943, with the next one in 2038.
Worked example: computing Easter 2027
The Anonymous Gregorian algorithm turns the church tables into integer arithmetic. Every division keeps only the whole-number quotient, and "mod" is the remainder. For the year 2027:
a = 2027 mod 19 = 13 b = 2027 ÷ 100 = 20 c = 2027 mod 100 = 27 d = b ÷ 4 = 5 e = b mod 4 = 0 f = (b + 8) ÷ 25 = 1 g = (b − f + 1) ÷ 3 = 6 h = (19a + b − d − g + 15) mod 30 = 271 mod 30 = 1 i = c ÷ 4 = 6 k = c mod 4 = 3 l = (32 + 2e + 2i − h − k) mod 7 = 40 mod 7 = 5 m = (a + 11h + 22l) ÷ 451 = 134 ÷ 451 = 0 month = (h + l − 7m + 114) ÷ 31 = 120 ÷ 31 = 3 day = ((h + l − 7m + 114) mod 31) + 1 = 27 + 1 = 28 Month 3, day 28: March 28, 2027. The intermediate values have a meaning. The value a places 2027 in the 19-year lunar cycle, and h counts the days from March 21 to the ecclesiastical full moon: h = 1 puts it on Monday, March 22. The value l counts the extra days to the following Sunday, so Easter falls l + 1 = 6 days after the full moon. The correction m is almost always 0 and only matters in a few late-moon years. In 2027 the table moon agrees with the sky: the Naval Observatory puts the astronomical full moon at 10:44 UT on March 22, two days after the March equinox.
Easter 2027 and the dates that depend on it
Most of the spring church calendar is measured from Easter Sunday. The offsets below are the standard ones; the Naval Observatory publishes the same offsets for Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday.
| Observance | Days from Easter | 2027 date | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) | โ47 | Tue, Feb 9 | last day before Lent |
| Ash Wednesday | โ46 | Wed, Feb 10 | Lent begins |
| Palm Sunday | โ7 | Sun, Mar 21 | Holy Week begins |
| Maundy Thursday | โ3 | Thu, Mar 25 | |
| Good Friday | โ2 | Fri, Mar 26 | NYSE closed |
| Holy Saturday | โ1 | Sat, Mar 27 | |
| Easter Sunday | 0 | Sun, Mar 28 | |
| Easter Monday | +1 | Mon, Mar 29 | not a US holiday |
| Ascension Day | +39 | Thu, May 6 | a Thursday |
| Pentecost (Whit Sunday) | +49 | Sun, May 16 | |
| Trinity Sunday | +56 | Sun, May 23 |
Two fixed dates fall inside this stretch in 2027: Valentine's Day, on Sunday, February 14, is the first Sunday of Lent, and St. Patrick's Day, Wednesday, March 17, falls in the week after the fifth Sunday of Lent. Daylight saving time begins on March 14, two weeks before Easter.
Easter dates from 2023 to 2032
Every date in this table comes from the same algorithm as the worked example and matches the Naval Observatory for the Western dates. The Orthodox column follows the Julian computus.
| Year | Ash Wednesday | Good Friday | Easter Sunday | Orthodox Easter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | February 22 | April 7 | April 9 | April 16 |
| 2024 | February 14 | March 29 | March 31 | May 5 |
| 2025 | March 5 | April 18 | April 20 | April 20 (same day) |
| 2026 | February 18 | April 3 | April 5 | April 12 |
| 2027 | February 10 | March 26 | March 28 | May 2 |
| 2028 | March 1 | April 14 | April 16 | April 16 (same day) |
| 2029 | February 14 | March 30 | April 1 | April 8 |
| 2030 | March 6 | April 19 | April 21 | April 28 |
| 2031 | February 26 | April 11 | April 13 | April 13 (same day) |
| 2032 | February 11 | March 26 | March 28 | May 2 |
Notice how the dates jump. From one year to the next, Easter moves either 8, 9, 15 or 16 days earlier or 12, 13, 19 or 20 days later, because the church moon falls about 11 days earlier each year and jumps a month later whenever it would land before March 21. 2027 and 2032 share the same Western and Orthodox dates.
Why 2027 is an early Easter
Across the whole century from 2000 to 2099, Easter falls in March only 22 times and in April the other 78. March 28 is one of the rarer dates: it occurs only in 2027 and 2032. The years around 2027 show how unusual it is. Easter was later in every year from 2017 through 2026, with the earliest of them on March 31, 2024, and after 2032 the next earlier Easter is March 25, 2035. The earliest Easter of this century was March 23, 2008, and the latest will be April 25, 2038.
Orthodox Easter 2027
Orthodox churches celebrate Pascha on Sunday, May 2, 2027, 35 days after the Western date. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America explains that the Orthodox Church still bases its calculation on the Julian calendar used at the time of the First Ecumenical Council in 325. The Julian calendar now runs 13 days behind the Gregorian one, and its lunar tables have drifted as well. Across the two centuries from 1900 to 2099, Orthodox Easter comes one week after Western Easter in 91 years, four or five weeks after it in 52, and on the same Sunday in 57. 2025 and 2028 are both shared Easters, with the 2028 date on April 16.
What is open on Good Friday and Easter
Neither Good Friday nor Easter Monday is a federal holiday, and Easter itself always falls on a Sunday. On Good Friday, March 26, 2027, federal offices, Federal Reserve Banks and post offices operate normally, but the New York Stock Exchange is closed: Good Friday is the one NYSE holiday that is not also a federal holiday. A few states treat Good Friday as a legal holiday under their own laws; Louisiana, for example, lists it alongside Mardi Gras. Easter Monday, March 29, is a regular workday in the United States. The Federal Holidays 2027 page covers the full closing calendar.

❓ Frequently asked questions
When is Easter 2027?
Easter 2027 is on Sunday, March 28, 2027. It is the earliest Easter since March 27, 2016, and Easter will not fall this early again until 2032, when it is on March 28 once more.
How many days until Easter 2027?
Counted from October 1, 2026, Easter Sunday 2027 is 178 days away, which is 25 weeks and 3 days. The countdown at the top of this page recalculates the number from today's date each time you open it.
When is Good Friday 2027?
Good Friday 2027 is Friday, March 26, two days before Easter. It is not a federal holiday, so federal offices, banks and post offices are open, but the New York Stock Exchange is closed that day.
When is Orthodox Easter 2027?
Orthodox Easter (Pascha) 2027 is on Sunday, May 2, 2027, five weeks after Western Easter. Most Orthodox churches still compute the date with the older Julian calendar tables, which is why the two dates often differ.
Why is Easter so early in 2027?
Easter is the first Sunday after the first church full moon on or after March 21. In 2027 that full moon falls on Monday, March 22, almost as early as the rule allows, so Easter lands on the following Sunday, March 28.
When does Lent start in 2027?
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, which is 46 days before Easter. The season counts 40 days because its six Sundays are not included. Mardi Gras, the day before, is Tuesday, February 9.
Is Easter Monday a holiday in the US?
No. Easter Monday, March 29, 2027, is not a federal holiday and is an ordinary business day in the United States. It is a public holiday in many other countries, and it is the traditional date of the White House Easter Egg Roll.
When is Easter 2028?
Easter 2028 is on Sunday, April 16, 2028. In 2028, Western and Orthodox Easter fall on the same Sunday, which happens in only some years.
๐ก Good to know
The Easter Egg Roll is an Easter Monday tradition
According to the White House, the Egg Roll officially dates back to 1878 and the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes, when Easter Monday on the White House grounds became an annual tradition. If the tradition holds, the 2027 event falls on Monday, March 29; the White House announces details each spring.
An early Easter compresses the whole spring
With Easter on March 28, Lent starts on February 10, before Presidents Day weekend, and Pentecost arrives on May 16, two weeks before Memorial Day. Schools and churches that schedule spring breaks or events around Easter week feel the shift most.
